UNDERWATER PHOTOGRAPHY

Capturing the diversity of life and ecosystems underwater.

From macro-photography in coral reefs to wide-angle photography of megafauna in pelagic waters, Arzucan is passionate is about documenting the variety of colours, textures and creatures that can be found in the ocean. As a student of award-winning photographers and photography judges like Alex Mustard and Saeed Rasheed, she uses photography as a tool to illustrate her work as a conservation scientist and diver. Currently she shoots on a tiny Canon GX5II in a Nauticam Housing with Inon S-2000 strobes sponsored by Nauticam and Reef Photo & Video.

CLOWNFISH (Amphiprion bicinctus)

Bright orange with distinctive white bars, clown anemonefish are among the most recognizable of all reef-dwellers. Protected by a layer of mucus on their skin, they are immune to the fish-eating anemone's lethal sting and live in symbiotic mutualism with it.

REEFSCAPES

Known as the “rainforests of the sea”, reefs are teeming with marine life and formed by colonies of coral polyps held together by calcium carbonate. They are some of the most diverse and valuable ecosystems on Earth, with more than a million animal and plant species are associated with them.

CORALS (Cnidaria)

Contrary to common misconception, corals are animals not plants. These marine invertebrates belong to a large group of colourful and fascinating animals called Cnidaria. Each individual coral animal is called a polyp, and most live in groups of hundreds to thousands of genetically identical polyps that form a colony.
